I want to share some notable quotes thrust upon me by the universe. Wisdom, in its many forms, commonly finds me by way of sudden unexpected encounters. Despite the many lessons I have learned, I still need reminders of the basics. All things considered, there are some pieces of information I received I haven’t quite figured out yet.
“Horizontal knowledge: Knowledge does not move vertical.”
“Healthy paranoia keeps a heart at rest”
“Doubt everything except yourself.”
-Unknown sources
The following quotes are from the same source:
“The amount of bullshit you allow in your life is proportionate to the amount of bullshit you allow yourself. If you allow none, you get none.”
“Pay the haters off, they’ll only destroy your reputation.”
“You will be dropped if you’re not constantly giving 110% with a smile on your face no matter what.”
“It’s not your personality, how cute you are, or what wisdom and energy you bring to the table; it’s how you meet their needs.”
“Word of mouth is strong”
“Of all the great artists you’ve hard of who suffered, think of the thousands with equivalent or greater talent who have suffered worse and remain unknown.”
Multiple quotes taken from one source:
“Love the opportunity to prove yourself”
“Doubt and fear steal more dreams than failure.”
“Your gift was given from God. What you do with it is how you repay him.”
“Make your opponent never want to play you again.”
“That worrying shit will kill you, you need to be more strong inside.”
-Accosted by a guy on the street in New Orleans who just had to tell me this.
“You’re only as old as who you fuck.”
-I still don’t know what this one means. I picked this one up at a bar in Nashville.
“You can pray to put air in the tire, or you can just put the air in the tire.”
-Given to me by a family who was a little too
“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.”
“You will never plough a field if you only turn it over in your mind.”
-College professor of mine when sharing his experience of getting a PHD
“Tis better to have a long life than a short life.”
I’ve never been superstitious. I’ve spent no time studying the occult. Horoscopes are more of a means of relatability than sources of spiritual insight to me. I’ve never understood the I-Ching, and I don’t think I’ve ever tried to.
But I know there’s some force out there connecting the experiences of our lives. I’ve had too many bizarre occurrences to write them all off as coincidence.
When hooking up my dryer, my electrical outlet exploded. I was unshocked and okay. I have been inches away from being run over by a truck before. I have also been shot at while crossing the street with my friend. No star chart or psychic can put it in simpler terms. If I were supposed to be dead, I’d imagine it would have happened by now.
I’ve thrown my fate to the wind and it’s resulted in a myriad of strange encounters with the public at large. My attitude is akin to a researcher. I search for synchronicities, and follow the clues. The parable of the dog who chases its tail in the pursuit of happiness, upon encountering the older dog who says, “wherever I go, my tail is sure to follow.” Comes to mind.
It hasn’t mattered if I’m in the southeastern woods or the cape in New England, my life is my life. The things set to happen to me, seem to happen to me regardless of setting or cast.
I can’t speak on any significance to the ‘why’ of it all. No explanation ‘why’ to any question has ever satisfied me anyway. The reason for a situation helps deepen an understanding or recognize a pattern, but offers no change. I’ve wasted more resources chasing wild ‘why’s than putting said resources to use in solving the problems. Which is where religion, spirituality, mysticism, and mythology proves useful. Explanations of a much bigger ‘why.’
Why are we here? Is a much more fun exploration than Why am I here?
Which is why I’m inclined to share the quotes. These quotes all came from unplanned happenstance, yet connect to a central theme whether I assigned them meaning or not.
In the words of one of my college professors,
“Statistically speaking, no one is special.”
